MOUNT RAINIER (ALSO CALLED MOUNT TACOMA, OR MOUNT TAHOMA) IS THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST, AND THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN IN THE U.S. STATE OF WASHINGTON WITH A SUMMIT ELEVATION OF 4,392 M (14,441 FT).

It is a large active stratovolcano located 87 km (54 miles) south-southeast of Seattle, in the Mount Rainier National Park. It is the most topographically prominent mountain in the continental United States and the Cascade Mountain Range.

Mount Rainier is one of 16 Decade Volcanoes identified by the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI) as being extremely dangerous due to their history of large, destructive eruptions and proximity to vastly populated territories. Because of its large amount of glacial ice, Mount Rainier could threaten the entire Puyallup River valley, and could pose an acute threat to the southern parts of the Seattle metropolitan area, a city of over 650,000 people with more than 3.7 million living in its surrounding areas.
