In Britain a mountain is defined as being a summit of at least 610 metres (2000 feet) above sea level. At 1346 metres the highest mountain on these islands is Ben Nevis in Scotland.
In the UK there are a number of 'ranges' of hills and mountains from the Peak District, the Lake District, Snowdonia to the Highlands of Scotland. Although nothing in Britain gets close to the kind of altitude of the high peaks of the Alps the northern latitudes mean that, particularly in Scotland, the summits are cloaked in snow during the winter months and provide a challenge to the most experienced mountain climbers.
• Ben Nevis is actually the remains of an ancient volcano situated in the Grampian Mountains, near the town of Fort William, in the Lochaber area of the Scottish Highlands. As the highest point in the UK and also one of the summits climbed in the popular Three Peaks Challenge, it is a magnet for visitors.
