The Annapurna Massif is home to the 10th highest mountain in the world and the first of the eight-thousanders to be climbed.
The first ascent of this giant did indeed spawn one of the great books on Himalayan Mountaineering; Annapurna, by French climber Maurice Herzog.
In his account of the ascent in 1950, Herzog details the epic climb he and his companion, Louis Lachenal, undertook and the near fatal descent that resulted in him losing his fingers and toes to frostbite.
